近くの海軍基地に捕らわれている悪名高き賞金稼ぎロロノア・ゾロの噂を聞き、仲間に入れようとコビーと共にシェルズタウンに向かう。ゾロが海軍に処刑されることを知って海軍基地に殴りこみ、解放したゾロと共闘。恐怖政治を敷いていた海軍大佐・斧手のモーガンを倒し、ゾロを最初の仲間にする。その後、海軍への入隊を望むコビーと別れ、ゾロと共に旅立つ。
